The One In Five Foundation For Kids
14 January 2025 UPDATED
(National)
Temple, Texas based national student advocacy and violence prevention nonprofit, The One In Five Foundation For Kids, formed in response to the mass school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, May 2022; in a national release Wednesday - announced that the City of Temple, Texas has been nominated as one of the first cities from across Texas & nationwide, as an official site location for its national school gun violence memorial.
The national project, will place 15 unique memorials, in 15 cities nationwide, which will pay tribute to the over 500 students killed nationally in school shootings since Columbine High School in 1999.
Temple was selected based on an early 2024 State and national poll and according to foundation officials, "Its integral example of consistent measures, starting within the culture of the classrooms - throughout Temple, Bell County & Central Texas."
"This selection is also, perhaps more importantly a testimony and illustration that the reach of this culture of violence taking away our youth, extends to cities small and wide and in hopes that those who visit the city & county will note, perhaps more clearly the true "heart of Texas," for its youth and students in both remembering those lost & committing, eternally, to the safety of those now & to come.
"An example of solidarity and commitment to follow in communities throughout the nation."
(Daniel Chapin, Founder)
Temple, Texas joins several selected nationwide, including the smallest in America - Monowi, Nebraska. The sole resident and Mayor, Elsie Eiler, has kept the smallest city in America alive. The foundation noted the example in the release stating, "1 person - No matter where, can make a difference."
America's Smallest To To Host School Gun Violence Memorial:
15 states and 15 cities, nationwide have been nominated as memorial location sites, including Austin, Texas, Spokane, WA, Nashville, Tennessee & Berkeley, California. Upon final completion, each city nominated would host one or more several, unique school gun violence memorials, placed throughout each selected city, including in high crime areas, parks and school communities. There is no cost associated with the memorials to the host cities as each memorials funding is covered by foundation benefactors, special fundraising efforts, etc..
Foundation officials further noted in the release that they are reaching out to city officials of selected cities nationwide further this week regarding the nomination and to discuss specific location options. Public input as well as a formal search for artists throughout Temple/Bell County and each selected location began this week.
